Heading to the Spring 2009 NY Fashion Week is a little like being in a show yourself. It’s the see and be seen week of the season for the industry, where editors, press, photographers, buyers and of course celebs all flock out en masse, making the already bad situation of trying to get an available cab in NYC all that much more cut-throat. While most of the country are still wearing maxi dresses, shorts, and both high and low end versions of the gladiator, the girls of Fashion Week have already moved on to rock ankle boots, vests, plaid, light weight scarves, and hints of leather all layered upon layer.
Fashionistas having already breezed through a few seasons of the whirlwind of Bryant Park, the Armory in Gramercy, and of course, the dreaded studios on the West Side Hwy (Alexander Wang on Saturday in the midst of a hurricane) know how to play the game and get into the best parties. You can spot these girls at the chicest neighborhood restaurant before the show snacking or sipping on a cocktail, getting to their seats right in time for the bright lights and thrumming music - which rarely happens at the time actually printed on the invitation, (Marc Jacobs being so notoriously late, that last season he came out BEFORE the show to announce he would be starting on time), and scooting through the quickest exit out. Try walking around the building and you’ll see the very same girls changing out of their sky high Givenchy’s and Louboutins to their more comfortable Lanvin flats for the next trek across town.
The collections are certainly the main draw, but almost getting trampled by J. Lo at Marc Jacobs, eyeing Kanye West at Proenza Schouler, and scouting out Gossip Girl Leighton Meester at Phillip Lim? Definitely a bonus. Pre-show champagne and goodie bags worth a new pair of shoes at Barneys? The cherry on top. After parties with free drinks flowing and celebrity dj’s at clubs not open to the public yet? Well, that’s just made the night and destroyed the following morning for work, but it’s a good thing one of those swag bags came with expensive under-eye treatments.
Done with NY Fashion Week? Never fear, fashion girl - there is still Milan and Paris to go.
