It's time for your lips to bust out of that "sheer pink" rut

The one beauty trend that has all the fashion folks excited this fall is the return of lips. Bold lips. Seen at shows like Christian Dior and Moschino, crayon-inspired lip colors stomped down the runways, complimenting structured jackets and high-waisted pants just so. And after seemingly endless years of glittery teen-queen lips, I will now refer to the past decade as 'the gloss years': a shot of high-impact creamy color looks so fresh. But, of course we all know, what looks good on a runway model does not necessarily make sense in reality - especially if your lips are a little drier than you'd like or if you have a few fine lines. Solution: always put on a waxy lip balm before color, and get one of those new-fangled "clear lipliners" that prevent feathering. I'm partial to Benefit D'finer D'liner ($18) because it smoothes lines and keeps your lipstick on lockdown. Now check out these five 'real-world' color options, listed in order from the most to the least confidence needed.

Prescriptives Colorscope Lipcolor in Purple Prose, $17.50
Don't be scared off by how dark and fabulously mysterious it looks. It won't look goth unless you pair it with a black cape and white face makeup. It's a rare person who tries to pull of a color of this magnitude, for sure, but if you pair it with clean, dewy skin and simple hair, it's going to look great. It's also fantastic on dark skin. Nouba Millebaci Long Lasting Lip Color #7, $18
As far as a super-sophisticated, velvety-matte, bright red goes, it doesn't get much better than this. And it stays on all day. Warning: Be really precise when applying this bad boy. I recommend a thin lip brush, lest you get red dribbles on the sides of your mouth. Ew.

Three Custom Color Lip Gloss in Dahlia, $18.50
I know, I know I naysayed lip gloss before, but I swear, this stuff gives gloss a good name. Zero stickiness, no unnecessary shimmer. It looks over-the-top fuchsia in the tube, but it goes on a cool, just-right pink.

Cargo Lip Gloss in Bella Bella, $20
This one's a real find: Charming, cranberry-stained wash of color -it's the gloss for adults. Bonus: It comes in a 2-in-1 situation with a pretty champagne/nude shade.

Tropez Moisturizing Lipstick in Mirage, $.99
It's amazing to me how a lipstick that costs less than a dollar can be so right on. Perfect, subtle, violet-y color that manages to look both cheeky and serious at the same time. Love it.
