For most of the country it’s still waaaay too cold to wear those spring clothes you excitedly bought back in February. So make the March-to-April transition a little easier with spring makeup colors that are fun, appropriate for the over 30 set, and look great with a turtleneck. For the ladies who haven’t worn anything but neutral brown since 1992, time to get over it. Trae Bodge, Co-Founder and Creative Director for Three Custom Color Specialists says, “Have fun and play with color. Go brighter than you normally would, and as long as it's on the sheer side, you will likely be pleasantly surprised with the results.”
Give your black eyeliner a break
A surprisingly gorgeous color for playing up your eyes is green, that is, if you stay away from grass-green and stick to softer, more sophisticated shades. Luba, a makeup artist for NYC’s Laura Geller Make-Up Studio recommends two ways to apply it: “Powder shadow or pencil liner smudged around the eye looks pretty and soft. Or try a clean line of liquid liner on the top lid for a crisp, professional look and to draw attention away from fine lines and wrinkles.” If you’re looking for some drama, Trae adds, “Branch out from the typical gray smoky eye and experiment with purples, rich coppers or midnight blues, which give unexpected pizzazz.”

Just wear red lipstick already
Nothing brightens up the face like red lips, but before you say, “I could never,” remember, it doesn’t have to be red red. “There is a red for everyone,” explains Luba. “And you can always make it sheer by mixing it with clear gloss if you don’t want it too intense.” Play around with berries, corals, and brick reds, and pick a color that complements your skin tone. (Figure out whether you are cool or warm-toned here.) If you’re not sold on red, another chic way to add color to your lips is with a creamy, non-shimmery mauve lipstick, which creates a sort of sexy, wood-nymph vibe. Or if you really want to ease into it, shiny peach gloss is easy and goes great with the aforementioned green eyeliner.

Matte skin makes you look old
Showcasing all this color requires a perfect backdrop. “You want glowing skin,” says Luba. “But we’re not doing
that bronze thing anymore.” Trae suggests sticking with soft, cream blushes for a dewy, healthy glow. “And go
light on the foundation,” adds Trae. “Let your skin show through and you’ll be surprised at how much younger you look.”

What a great article for someone who is, um, over 50. I have been wanting a change, but worried about trying to look too young. I appreciate Courtney's suggestions and the list of specific products to try out. No more matte foundation for me!

I'm in love with (the unpronouncable) Shu Uemura's new eye shadow - I'll try the green - I wear the Yellow Elation everyday - it's not actually yellow, just a really nice nude with great coverage.
