When the hell did it get so complicated? Skinny leg? Straight leg? Drainpipes? Elephants? Just when I figured out how to hide my muffin top, waistlines are rising. Screw it—there's enough dresses out there this season to go side-saddle for months.
Wait—it doesn't have to be that tricky. All those choices means there's the right fit for everyone.
If you're over 25, it's probably best to skip the drainpipes. It's a little tired and, let's face it, not a very flattering shape. If you do like the skinny look, go for a modified version. Two that I love are Levi's 562s and J.Crew Matchsticks—they both give the look of the skinny leg, but have higher waists and create a longer silhouette. Also Gap 1969 Straight Leg has a great fit. Not really tapered, just straight and very sharp.
On the wider side, there are tons of options. Sky-high waists and wider legs are supremely flattering to most everyone. They elongate the leg, show off curves and can be dressed up in a darker rinse with trouser cut pockets. Grey Ant, J Brand and J.Crew all do chic versions.
The only thing to avoid this season is the ubiquitous boot leg. But don't worry—give it a couple of seasons and it will be back!
