“It’s hard to imagine that just 25 years ago, pediatric heart transplants were almost unheard of, yet today almost 300 heart transplants take place each year at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. It’s hard to imagine that just 25 years ago, no one had ever seen a Miracle Balloon, the paper icon that today raises millions each year for children’s hospitals.
“It’s even harder to imagine where children would be today without the 170 Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Within the walls of children’s hospitals, the polio vaccine was first tested, AIDS was first identified in children, and fetal surgery was first performed to correct spina bifida. This past year Children’s Miracle Network hospitals have continued to make a series of medical firsts. At Columbus Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, a ‘domino’ heart transplant involving the youngest living heart donor was performed. In November, the first-ever stem cell transplant into a human brain was performed at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. No doubt, the list of firsts will continue to grow.”
