Years before menopause, a milder version sets in. What is perimenopause? If you’re in your early 40s, and you feel moody, headachy, sweaty at night with hot flashes and vaginal dryness; if your joints ache, you need to urinate often and you can’t concentrate – you may be experiencing your perimenopause, the transition period of up to six years leading to menopause. The cause of all this change is the fluctuation of estrogen and progesterone. When the estrogen is high, you may feel PMS-type symptoms, and when it’s low, you get the hot flashes or night sweats. Don’t worry; we’ve got suggestions for you.
Treatment:
Often physicians will prescribe low-dose birth control pills to keep hormone levels more constant, anti-depressants for the mood swings, and progesterone to treat the PMS symptoms and overly-heavy bleeding. But certain lifestyle changes also help, like adding soy, flax, Vitamin E and herbal aids like gingko biloba, evening primrose oil and black cohosh to your diet.
