Robbers on High Street call Grand Animals “more refined” than its debut album, Tree City. While the band has moved in a new musical direction, eschewing its ‘80s post-punk approach in favor of ‘60s Britpop and ‘70s AM-rock, it fails to meet either aspiration. Sure, the band can play well, and frontman/songwriter Ben Trokan has a way with words, but unlike those they choose to emulate, there’s not a memorable hook or refrain to ride.
