We flipped through the entire cable schedule for the next month and compiled these Cliff Notes for you – the shows you need to record, stat.

Confessions of a Matchmaker
Sundays, 11pm, A&E
A criminally underrated reality show. Tell-it-like-it-is matchmaker Patti takes her relationship-challenged clients, dishes out some tough love, and sends them off on dates. Sometimes excruciating, often cute, always addictive.

 Private Practice
Series Premiere, Wednesday, September 26 at 9pm, ABC
We so wanted to hate Dr. Addison Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy. But Kate Walsh made her so darn charming, that we're likely going to jump Grey's ship for the spin-off. Deciding factor: Taye Diggs. Mmm.

Wide Angle: A Woman Among Warlords
Tuesday, September 11 at 9pm, PBS
It takes serious balls to stand up to the warlords of Afghanistan. This documentary is about Malalai Joya, who did just that. She got so many death threats while running for parliament that she was forced into hiding. Intense.

Mad Men
Thursdays, 10pm, AMC
Yeah, the writing’s great in this drama about a Madison Avenue advertising agency in the 1960s. But we really love it for the amazing wardrobe the female characters get to wear.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Monday thru Thursday, 11pm, Comedy Central
It'll take the apocalypse to end our 11-year love affair with this one. It doesn't hurt that Jon Stewart's graying hair is making him look more like Anderson Cooper every day.

Kid Nation
Series premiere, Wednesday, September 19 at 8pm, CBS
Controversy's been brewing for months about this reality show – whether sending 40 kids to build their own society in a ghost town constitutes child abuse or breaks child labor laws. Watch the show. Have an opinion.

Flight of the Conchords
Sundays, 10:30pm, HBO
Hilarious, deranged, touching. It's worth the $12 a month to keep HBO. Look out for Murray, the Conchords' manager, who doubles as the entire New Zealand tourism board.

Iconoclasts: Renee Zellweger and Christiane Amanpour
Thursday, September 13 at 7pm, Sundance Channel
Dame Renee interviews Mega-Dame Christiane. Now that's good television.

The Soup
Fridays, 10pm, E!
Joel McHale, formerly of Burger King commercial fame, boils down an entire week of daytime and reality television into just the highlights. Perfect for ADD.

Monster
Thursday, September 20 at 7pm, Sundance Channel
Charlize Theron's Oscar-winning performance as Aileen Wuornos, one of the few female serial killers in history, is simply chilling.

Gossip Girl
Series premiere, Wednesday, September 19 at 9pm, CW
An Upper East Side prep school show. You might not talk about this one openly, but we guarantee that your friends and co-workers are secretly tuning in, too.

The Truth About Food
Series Premiere, Monday, September 17 at 8pm, Discovery Health
Like MythBusters, but for food. This show conducts intricate experiments to find out if you really are what you eat. It'll satisfy your dork tooth.

 WordGirl
Sundays, 10am, PBS
This show isn't for you. But if you have kids in the 4-9 range who are over Sesame Street, they'll love it. A superhero who makes them laugh while teaching better vocab and grammar? Awesome.

K-Ville
Series premiere, Monday, September 17 at 9pm, Fox
Gotta love a police drama. K-Ville takes place in law-challenged, post-Katrina New Orleans.
