The very well-acted (by Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin), 1967 film directed by Terence Young.
Miss Hepburn earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of a blind woman terrorized by three strangers in her New York apartment. Hepburn’s performance is solid and top notch as she turns her supposed “weakness” of being blind to her advantage—and instead of being crippled by being in the dark, it becomes her competitive strength against the intruders, making the audience cheer for her.
The director’s use of close space shots and a claustrophobic atmosphere works well, adding to the tension. A young Alan Arkin, who last year received an Oscar for his role in Little Miss Sunshine, is perfect as a psychotic killer who will stop at nothing to get what he wants; in this case, a doll stuffed with drugs.
The screenplay, written by Robert Carrington, was originally a hit Broadway play by Frederick Knott, which successfully transferred to the silver screen and maintains all the right ingredients for a true, timeless thriller.
