Mourdock Latest Politico to Step on Rape Mine

Republican Senate candidate from Indiana reckons God intends rape babies. God has yet to respond.

Richard Mourdock did well to win his primary in Indiana, ousting longtime Senate fixture Richard Lugar. But then on Tuesday night, in a televised debate with Democrat Joe Donnelly in a tight and pricey contest, he fielded a question about abortion in cases of rape or incest.

“I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape,” he said, “that it is something that God intended to happen.”

We all remember Missouri Rep. Todd Akin saying that a “legitimately” raped woman’s body can shut down reproduction, like a self-cleaning toilet. This is a similar story. Mitt Romney has backed away from Mourdock as Mourdock himself backpedals furiously.

“Anyone who would suggest that [God preordained rape] is just sick and twisted,” he said. “No, that’s not even close to what I said.” Meanwhile, Donnelly, who opposes abortion, is claiming he doesn’t believe “my God, or any God, would intend that to happen.”

God did not return a request for comment Wednesday. But it would be nice to hear from Her, preferably before Election Day.
