Fox News Questions Gabby Douglas' Patriotism

It’s that pink leotard she wore while winning gold. It’s not American enough.

With a ticker that read “NEW CONCERNS ABOUT AMERICAN PATRIOTISM AT THE OLYMPICS,” Fox News decided to question the patriotism of Gabby Douglas, the first African-American to win the individual all-around gold medal in gymnastics.

“America Live" guest host Alisyn Camerota was deeply disturbed that Douglas wore a pink leotard for her historic achievement. Camerota commented that the American athletes’ uniforms “don’t carry the stars and stripes look as much as they had in past years” while also noting that there “we’re not hearing the chants of ‘USA, USA’ that we’ve heard in some Olympics gone by.” Her guest, David Webb, concluded that all this was due to some sort of “soft anti-American feeling that Americans can't show our exceptionalism.”

Instead of focusing on the sixteen-year-old’s amazing accomplishment on behalf of the USA, Fox News decided that the more important display of patriotism is what color lycra an athlete is sweating through. It’s highly unlikely that the U.S. women’s gymnastics team picked their uniform colors because they’re afraid to look awesome and American at the same time. Have the people at Fox News ever met teenage girls? Good luck trying to tell them what they should wear.
