For the Six of You Who Didn't Already Know, Anderson Cooper is Gay

The Silver Fox comes out, doesn't make a big deal about it.

Now you can finally explain to grandma why Anderson Cooper hasn't found a nice girl and settled down already. Television's most recognizable journalist came out today to The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan

There was a time when coming out publicly was a gigantic deal, like when Ellen did so on the cover of Time. It would be all anyone could talk about on TV and around the water cooler. (This was when there were water coolers, back when people had jobs.) There were always rumors of nervous sponsors and executives. There was speculation about who would come out next. Then that celebrity would become the spokesperson for all gay people everywhere forever. But as Entertainment Weekly recently reported, celebrities are - shockingly - no longer using their coming out as a major media event.

Cooper came out to Sullivan via email, writing:

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

This is what progress looks like.

Actually, progress would be nobody caring about anyone's sexuality. Rumors about Cooper's sexual orientation have swirled for years.

So let's just say that this is what progress kind of looks like. Cooper comes out. The public reads about it today. Life goes on. Next time CNN or 60 Minutes sends Cooper to report from some godforsaken corner of the earth, will anyone care that he's gay?

No.

Not anyone who matters.
